Welcome to the Podfic Repod Challenge
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Podfic Repod Challenge
Much like the various fic remix challenges out there, a podfic challenge would involve putting the podfics you have made on the table and inviting another to make their own version of it. And in return you would make a podfic of a story another participant has already podficed. Please continue reading for more details.
Why would we do this?
Every reader brings a unique interpretation of the text. One reader will read a scene with a tinge of sadness, another with hopefulness. Some readers do voices, others add music to their podfics. Not to mention everyone has their own sound, feel and style. Two people can read the same fic and still produce two very different, yet equally awesome podfics.
Do you have ulterior motives for doing this?
Why yes, as a matter of fact, I do. I'm hoping that running a challenge like this will help with the stigma that currently exists around multiple podfics of the same story. People seem to think that if someone makes a podfic of something that's already been podficed it's because they found the first podfic lacking in some way. Never mind that there are a lot of other reasons someone might want to podfic the story.
This challenge won't be about that though, it'll be about some of the other reasons you might want to podfic a story that has already been done. Like it's fun! And different! You really love the story in question! Hopefully this will help people realize that just because two podfics are a reading of the same story doesn't mean that they are copies of each other (podfic is not just a format shift from text to audio, it's an art form, a performance), or that one is necessarily better than the other. Just like a cover of a song can bring a new dimension/feel to the song being covered.
I think this is a cool idea but I just don't have time right now to sign up, can I still take part?
Yes! If you're down with the idea of someone else podficing stories you've already podficed, you can sign your podfics up to potentially be podficed (I can't promise that they will be though, there are other factors at play here). This is strictly opt in, if you're a podficer that isn't comfortable with people making alternate podfics to stories you've already done... well I can't promise that no one will ever repodfic them, but they won't be repoded as part of this challenge.
I'd like to take part in this challenge, but I've never podficed before, can I still take part?
Yes! Since there will be people offering up their podfics to be repoded, without signing up to repod themselves, we'll have a larger pool of podfic than podficers. Go ahead and sign up, and we'll make sure you have a choice of podfics to repod. You just, obviously, won't have one of yours repoded, since you haven't any.
I don't have an LJ/DW account, can I still sign up?
Sure, this community allows anonymous comments. Simply email me (parakaproductions at gmail dot com) your submission and I can post it here on your behalf.
I'm not really comfortable with the idea of people repoding my podfics, can I opt out of this challenge?
That won't be necessary. This is strictly opt in, if you're a podficer that isn't comfortable with people making alternate podfics to stories you've already done... well I can't promise that no one will ever repodfic them, but the won't be repoded as part of this challenge.
I'm an author whose works have been podficed in the past but don't want my fics to be podficed again.
If that's the case, well, I'll be sad, but you don't need to worry. Unless blanket permission has been publicly given, we're still going to be asking for permission before podficing. Just say no when asked, no harm, no foul.
What are the minimum requirements to sign up for having my podfics repoded?
The absolute minimums are:
-Must have made at least 3 podfics in the past.
-Must have at least one podfic under an hour.
If you don't meet those minimums, you might still be able to have a podfic of yours repoded, I just can't make any promises.
I don't meet the minimum requirements, can I still have a podfic of mine repoded?
It's a possibility. If you don't meet the minimum requirements but have made at least one podfic in the past, give me that information when you sign up and I'll assign your name to someone in the challenge, however the repoder will have the option of repoding a non-participant's podfic instead, since they may not have enough options to choose from.
If I meet the minimum requirements, will I definitely have one of my podfics repoded?
Hopefully? That's the plan anyway. I'm hoping that even if someone drops out that a pinch hit can fill in (although it might be slightly late). However, since this is a podfic challenge, the fic author has a say in the matter too. I don't really see it happening but in the freaky and unlikely case where the fic authors of all your podfics say no to having another version of their fics podficed, well, there's not much I can do about that, except send you internet hugs and say I'm sorry.
I'd like to participate and have one of my podfics repoded, except there's one special one I don't want repoded, is that ok?
Every podficer that offers their podfics up to be repoded has the option of holding one podfic back. Maybe it's the podfic that you poured blood, sweat and tears into and the idea of someone else repoding it makes you uncomfortable, that's fine. However if you have more than one that makes you feel protective, you might want to re-examine putting your fics up for repod.
I've done group podfics, do they count towards my minimum?
They can, so long as the other podficers of the podfic are on board with the idea and you've had a decent part in it.
Using my own podfics as an example, I could count In From the Cold towards my open podfic (I recorded about 3 hours of the 5 total hours) however I would not include Queensguard since my part was only seconds long.
There's no hard and fast ratio, just use your best judgment or, if in doubt, ask a mod.
If I sign up as a non-participant, does that mean I will definitely have one of my podfics repoded?
No. And I can't even tell you the likelihood of it until I see how many people sign up as what. I know there's at least some interest from first time/newbie podficers signing up but I can promise nothing.
The podficer I got has so many awesome podfics, can I repod more than one?
If you have time. Anything repoding beyond the scope of this challenge though, you might want to discuss with the podficer in question.
I've gotten my assignment and I just don't think I can do it. What do I do?
Contact the mod as soon as you can. If it's a matter of none of the podfics assigned to you work for you, I'd ask that you try but if it's something you just can't do, I can try to work something out. If you have to drop out of the challenge for whatever reason, please let me know as soon as possible so that pinch hits can be arranged if needed.
I've gotten my assignment and have chosen a fic but I can't get a hold of the author for permission to record. What do I do?
If you've tried to contact them and they just aren't getting back to you, please contact a mod and we'll see if we can't help. Also, take a look at the other podfics on offer and see if any of those will work for you and do that podfic instead.
Can I get creative with my remix?
Yes! We highly encourage creativity! If you feel that a podfic would work best as a group reading (and can find other readers to help out), go for it! If you feel that sound effects or music fit, do it! Just make sure that if you get someone to help you, or are using something someone else made, that you have their permission.
If you're not sure if something is outside the scope of this challenge, feel free to ask a mod.
Is there a minimum/maximum length required for our submission?
I'm going to say no. However, it feels a bit like a cop out if you chose a 2 minute podfic to repod. Maybe try for something at least 10 minutes long. Or do more than one if the podficer has done a couple short podfics.
As for maximums, hey, if you can get a 10 hour podfic done in a month I will build a small shrine in honour of your awesomeness. However most podficers should think about how much time they actually have before choosing someone's podbang-length podfic. (Hint: for many people there's about 5-10 minutes of solid work for every minute of finished product so even an hour long fic can take 10 hours to make)
Sign ups will be open from now to August 8th, 2010. Please go here and fill out the appropriate form to sign up.
There are a couple different ways to sign up. Participants (podfic to repod)/Participant (not enough or no podfic to repod)/Non-Participants.
Participants (podfic to repod) are people that would like to make a repod podfic and have a podfic made for them. In order to sign up in this category you need to meet the minimum requirements of:
-Must have made at least 3 podfics under your belt.
-Must have at least one podfic under an hour.
If you meet the minimum requirements, that means you will have someone repod one of your podfics.
Participants (not enough or no podfic to repod) are people that would like to make a repod podfic but don't meed the minimum requirements to have one made for them.
If you don't meet the minimum requirements but have made at least one podfic in the past, you can maybe still have a podfic of yours repoded. Maybe. Give me the information on your podfic(s) when you sign up and I'll assign your name to someone in the challenge, however the repoder will have the option of repoding a non-participant's podfic instead, since they may not have enough options to choose from.
Non-Participants are people that wouldn't mind seeing a podfic of their's repoded but don't want to (or can't right now) take part as a participant and repod someone else's podfic. Non-participants are awesome and important to this challenge so we encourage as many people as possible to sign up if they can't be a participant.
Dates and Deadlines
Sign Ups: Now-August 8th, 2010*
*Officially the deadline will be when I edit the post saying "Sign ups are over" which will be whenever I get home from Vividcon, likely some time on the 9th. If you sign up some time after August 8th but before I officially close sign ups, you're good.
Fandom Sign Ups: August 10th-12th, 2010
I'll send out a list of all the fandoms that we have podfic to potentially repod and people need to tell me which ones they'd be ok podficing.
Mad Mod Organizing: August 13th-August 14th, 2010
During this time, I plan to be holed up in my room with spreadsheets, poster boards, sticky notes and coloured markers trying to match participants up with podficers to repod.
Assignments: August 15th, 2010
Assuming I survive the organizing stage (seriously, you should see the charts I made for the Critical Feedback Exchange and I'm pretty sure that one will prove easier to organize) this is the day everyone receives their assignments.
Recording/Posting: August 16th-September 15th, 2010
As soon as you have received author permission to record and have finished recording the podfic, go ahead and post it to the comm. There isn't any sort of posting schedule. If you finish your podfic in the first week, feel free to post it then.
Check in Points: August 27th, September 3rd, and September 10th, 2010
Check in points will be posted by the mods as friendly reminders to some and opportunities for participants to ask for help if needed. If you haven't posted your podfic yet, just let us know that you're still working on it and haven't dropped out.
Pinch Hits: August 16th-September 30th, 2010
Ideally a pinch hitter will be getting their assignments as soon as I find out that one is needed, however anyone that hasn't posted by September 15th, 2010 will have their assignment assessed and assigned a pinch hitter (extensions may be granted if it's clear that the original participant can actually finish).
And We're Finished: October 1, 2010
A masterpost of all the podfics for this challenge will be posted.
Somewhere within that time line there will likely be a post
Other Things To Know
-Since this is podfic, we do ask that repoders make sure the author of the fic is ok with having more podfic of their stuff. We recommend explaining that this is part of a repod challenge so they don't come back telling you someone has already podficed that story. It'll save time.
-When signing up, if any of the author's you have podficed have publicly given blanket permission a link to that statement would be helpful and time saving. If you've podficed any of your own stories, we'll assume that they are fair game without additional permission.
-For participants, you can check out this post (on LJ) or this post (on DW) over at amplificathon to see if the author of the podfic you're thinking of repoding has already given blanket permission.
-Please have a centralized location of all of your podfic. With the archive, this is generally pretty easy. If you don't use the archive, please have some sort of master list of all your podfics with active downloads.
-If you'd prefer, you can also find this comm on DW at multipodicity
And I think I've talked enough now. Everything clear as mud? Feel free to ask questions in the comments.
